This has been compiled by The Deptford Green Parents’ Forum but we try to be as inclusive as we can. Our aim is to work with all the school’s community to ensure the new school is a success for the students and staff now and in the future. In that spirit we welcome posts and comments from all concerned – staff, pupils, local residents, the council, builders and contractors.

Please feel free to comment on any posting you like. All comments will be moderated first and no abuse will be tolerated.

We will not post any contact details on this site either. If you post a comment saying you just want to get in touch, we will also come back to you and not publish your comment. You can also contact the Parents’ forum through the school.

Please let us know if you have any information, photos, documents or contacts that might help us or if there is any information we have not provided – we will try to answer any questions. (All links open new windows)

Deptford Green is a community school in the inner London borough of Lewisham. Everyone associated with the school is proud of its achievement, its sense of community and its students. (Ofsted report)

We want to keep it that way, which is why it so important to us that the proposed new school enhances, rather than inhibits, all that is great about the place.

The council and the Building Schools for the Future programme are proposing to bulild a new single site school that will be fully occupied and complete by 2012.

Information about the design of schools  is included in a book called Picturing School Design (pdf).

The current school buildings have a total floor space of 11,933 square metres. The proposed new school could have only 10,560 square metres. There is a minimum space per pupil standard for for schools – called Building Bulletin 98 (BB98). This comes out to the 10,560 figure. But the council hopes to make Deptford Green 5%-8% bigger than that.

There will be about 150 more pupils – 1,300 in total – in the new school. This is not negotiable.

The total cost will be more than £30m. It will be a Private Finance Initiative (PFI) project, which means the school will be owned and managed by a private company with the school paying rent for it.

There will also be a new all-weather, floodlit sports facility built on a small part of Fordham Park to which the school will have first call. When the school is not using it, the pitch will be rented out for community use. Parents and the school want this facility to be as big as possible.
